All of us have hollow cavities around the nose in the cheek bones called sinuses. They produce and send mucus into the nose through small channels. Inflammation of the lining of sinus blocking the normal drainage of mucus in the sinuses is known as Acute Sinusitis. Sometimes it becomes chronic lasting for months. The infection spreads to the space around the eye, into the blood and bones or even into the brain.

Causes of acute sinusitis

They are usually caused by infection; most common of them is frontal sinus, affecting the cheekbones. Allergies may cause inflammation and block the nasal passages. If the wall between the nostrils called septum is corked it may block the sinus passage. Growth of tissues called nasal polyps may restrict the nasal channels. Some other medical conditions like cystic fibrosis, HIV and other diseases may cause nasal blockage.

Symptoms of acute sinusitis

The common symptoms are blocked nose or and throbbing pain in the infected area. High fever may also develop for some. Difficulty in breathing through the nose and in some cases reduced sense of smell may also occur. Sometimes there is a runny nose with greenish or yellow discharge caused by the infected mucus or pus. When the thick mucus blocks the channels the pain and tenderness may worsen. Headache, cough, pressure in the ears, toothache and bad breath are other symptoms.

Treating acute sinusitis

Normally there is no need for any treatment of this condition. The immune system will deal with the viral infection and the symptoms disappear within a week. If the symptoms do not clear within a week, antibiotics may be prescribed by doctors. Pain killers may be used for pain relief. Nasal sprays may help in clearing the congestion in the nasal passage. Traditionally acute sinusitis is treated with steam inhalation. A Warm shower is also advised for breathing in the moist and warm air. Applying warm and damp towels can ease facial pain.

Prevention

Avoiding polluted air, reducing contact with people with cold and reducing alcohol consumption are helpful.

Would You Like To Know How To Treat Your Sinusitis Step By Step? Just Come In!

Sinus infection being an allergy which is very common to encounter and easy to be prone to; requires a very handy treatment procedure and perhaps that is the reason why we come across so many medications for sinusitis relief.

One of the solutions of sinusitis relief is surgery. Surgery is done for the removal of the infected Sinuses, that is of the cavities that swell and trap air as well as other secretions like mucus etc which results in the exertion of pressure on the sinus walls which leads to headaches and other discomforts. This procedure for relief from sinusitis is generally not preferred by many people because of the expenses involved in the process as well as with the fear attached to the word "operation/surgery" even though it is somewhere close to complete cure.

The markets are therefore flooded with different kinds of medications for sinusitis relief like pain killers, anti-congestants, decongestants etc., which are generally not recommended for stretched use. These methods of sinusitis relief appear pale when compared with home medications that work wonders though temporarily. But these at the same time are, not complemented with side effects. Let us start with home medications that one can avail if he/she does not have an access to medicines right away. To Start with inhaling steam or peppermint steam applying gentle heat on the inflamed area, saline nasal spray, eating jalapeno pepper, etc., are some of the very frequently used techniques.

But in acute cases one can use pain killers like Asprin and its prototypes to get immediate relief from pain and decongestants like Sudafed. Many decongestants are also available in the spray form which work faster to provide relief because they reach the anterior nasal mucosa and reduces its size and reaches the upper mucosa thereby enabling the normal functioning for at least three to four hours. Apart from these immediate medications there is also an alternative of using an anti bacterial course of Augmentin at 500mg three times a day, for three weeks or fluconazole for fungal infection if that is the case.

The medications prescribed for sinusitis relief are targeted only towards the widening of the sinus passage which would in turn drain water and other secretions with ease.

A sinus is a cavity in the bones near the nose. The function of these sinuses is to evacuate mucus and air from the nasal membrane. An inflammation of the sinuses leads to trapping of this mucus and dry air inside the sinuses. This causes excruciating pain. Sinus infection medication provides a relief from this pain.

The sinus infections are classified into three categories on the basis of the duration of the illness. Acute sinus infection lasts for approximately three weeks. Chronic sinus infection is the one that lasts from anywhere between three to eight weeks. Recurring sinus infections are the ones occurring frequently over time.

The sinus infection medication depends on the category or type of infection. Acute sinus infections can be cured with home remedies whereas chronic infections demand a prolonged treatment as the symptoms last for a longer duration of time.

The home remedies for treating sinus infection, though do not cure the disease, but are effective in relieving the pain. Inhaling the steam from a vaporizer is perhaps one of the best home medication for sinus infections. Placing a hot cloth over the inflamed area of the face also provides relief.

In addition to these, intake of jalapeño peppers and ripe grapes' juice is also effective. Relief can also be obtained by applying a paste of cinnamon with water, or ginger with milk or water. The steam of eucalyptus oil, hen inhaled, proves an effective treatment for sinus infection. Intake of warm fluids should be increased to allow the trappings in sinuses to open.

Sinus infection medication is prescribed on the basis of the root cause of the infection. At times, diseases like asthma, HIV, cystic fibrosis and certain allergies cause sinusitis. In these cases, before treating the sinusitis, these ailments need to be treated.

Other treatments for sinus infection include decongestants, nasal sprays, antibiotics and pain killers. Because of the side effects, steroids are not prescribed. If the infection is not cured by any of the above mentioned treatments, an endoscopic surgery is resorted to for widening the openings of sinuses.

Thus, various sinus infection medications are available. The only thing that needs to be taken care of while selecting the treatment is the nature, duration and cause of the infection.
